LEAD Fairfax Kicks off a New Year with a Leadership Institute

The LEAD Fairfax Aspiring Leaders Summer Institute, funded primarily by the Virginia Department of Education’s School Leadership Development Preparation Program grant, was held July 24-27, 2007 at the Holiday Inn Select Hotel in Chantilly, Virginia.  Participants included the 2007-2008 LEAD Fairfax Accelerated Certification Cohort members, Administrative Interns, and Aspiring Principals.  Also invited to help support the development of the cohort members were their Mentor Principals and Assistant Principals.  Several selected Support Leaders and Pre-service participants engaged in several sessions throughout the week as well.

Guest presenters, from within Fairfax County Public Schools as well as other areas of the country, engaged the participants in meaningful experiences they could immediately integrate into their leadership design.  Sessions included a focus on Values, Building Leadership, Cognitive Coaching, Mentoring, Action Learning, Culturally Competent Leaders, Ethics, and an Introduction to Systems Thinking.

Anthony Terrell, an Administrative Intern said “The Summer Institute provided a sobering, yet inspiring, introduction to the multifaceted challenge of education leadership. As a classroom teacher, I especially appreciate the way the institute helped me to begin the long process of transforming my thinking from the relatively insular concerns of my classroom to the myriad concerns that accompany leading effective schools.”

Aide Lopez, an Accelerated Certification Cohort member shared her perspective:  “The Aspiring Leaders Summer Institute was a dynamic four days of developing successful leadership with an array of inspiring speakers that focused on values, culturally competent leaders, ethics and morality in leadership,  and other useful leadership issues.  We also had an opportunity to work on team building among the different cohorts and leaders in the county, which was valued immensely and by the last day we left bonding and wanting more.

Gail Porter, Aspiring Principal, stated “It was an honor to take part in the Aspiring Leaders Summer Institute.  The three-day session provided me with an opportunity to network with colleagues and the future leaders of our schools.  The energy and exchange of ideas was invigorating.  Over the course of the institute, I gained new knowledge of essential practices for school leaders and I have been able to apply these practices immediately.  Most importantly, through self-reflection, I have a better understanding of myself as a leader.

Rose Kaspersen, Senior Communications Specialist, shared “One of the best aspects of the day, was getting to network with school-based employees.  Being in Support, our paths don't often cross, yet hearing their concerns and issues made both groups more aware of how we can work together to support student achievement.

LEAD Fairfax is looking forward to a full year of exciting professional development opportunities for its cohorts.  The partnership with the University of Richmond, the University of Virginia, and Virginia Commonwealth University will continue to make these opportunities available, particularly through additional leadership institutes.  Information about the fall and spring institutes will become available as planning develops.
